Art That Doesn’t Suck - May 25, 2007
Regretfully, the artwork previously featured here is no longer available for viewing or purchase. Should the status change, the review will be reinstated.
This week’s featured art is The Strolling Player by Henry Bateman
I really, really enjoy a well-composed silhouette. I’m not talking about the “dancing kids and rock stars who love their mp3 players” silhouettes, I’m talking about real quality here. The offset and flow of the figure lends itself extremely well to the aspect ratio of the frame. The use of whitespace instead of a photographed or digitally inserted background was a great choice. I like depth in a silhouette, rather than a flat shape that you have to imagine being a real subject. I especially like how the identity and location of the player is up to the viewer — although the artist tells us in his online gallery where the shot was composed, it’s easy to imagine this player walking the streets of a South American city, a town in Mexico, or New Orleans, to name a few. It has an almost rustic feel to it that I enjoy.
Like any art at ImageKind, the frame and matte can be customized by the buyer. Feel free to click the image to learn more about it or to maybe purchase a print for yourself.
